SPECIAL THEMED SESSION  - OPEN DISCUSSION

Presentation Skills - Presenting Professionally

Monday 5 July 2010  |  4.30pm

Bayside 105

Peter Traynor

The amount of work required to initiate, develop, carry out, analyse and transcribe any scientific investigation is substantial. Given the work that has gone ahead, too often we see our scientific colleagues stumble at the last hurdle – when they present their work to their peers and others.

Presentation skills are like any other - they are learnt by tuition and improved through practice - yet too often these skills are either assumed, or unrehearsed, or, worst of all, not even considered!  This session is of itself cannot be a panacea; but it can be a strong basis for you on which to build for your future presentations.

Areas of discussion will include:

  • The 4 P’s – Preparation, Practice, Presentation, and Pitfalls

  • Oral presentations as well as poster presentations

  • Specifics related to various audiovisual equipment and how best to make use of these

  • Evaluating yourself and others

Interactive audience participation, as well as enjoyment will be strongly encouraged!

Peter Traynor is the Regulatory and Technical Manager at Oxoid Australia Pty Limited and has attended more conferences and sessions than he would care to admit!..... but it is that experience that developed a passion for excellence in public speaking and professional presentation skills.

This workshop has been previously run at ASM and AIMS national meetings, and numerous years for postgraduate students and staff at University of Melbourne. Most recently it was run for Toastmasters International at their convention in Victoria. A summarised version was published in the ASM Microbiology Australia Journal in 2003.

  • How is IP protection gained?

  • What are the costs vs benefits?

  • Can I still publish my work?

  • Who owns the intellectual property?

  • How do I commercialise my invention?

  • How can I further develop my IP after it is commercialised?

Current Workforce Issues in Clinical Microbiology

Silvano Palladino

This presentation will address a number of topical professional workforce issues facing ASM members in the pathology related industry. Of particular focus will be the activities of the ASM Workforce Standing Committee.

Over the last 12 to 18 months there has been a great deal of activity in the workforce area that could significantly impact the professional practice of clinical microbiology. The ASM Workforce Standing Committee was recently established to “consider and provide advice on emerging issues relating to legislation, accreditation, professional development and workforce planning for microbiologists”.

An update will be provided on a range of issues including:

- Workforce trends

- The Pathology Associations Council

- Competency Based Standards

- Role delineation in the pathology workforce

- The RCPA Faculty of Science

- Clinical Scientists

- Registration & Accreditation
